A test for whether or not Voyager 1 has crossed the heliopause

چکیده
The Voyager 1 spacecraft is currently in the vicinity of the heliopause, which separates the heliosphere from the local interstellar medium. There has been a precipitous decrease in particles accelerated in the heliosphere and a substantial increase in galactic cosmic rays (GCRs). The evidence is unclear, however, as to whether Voyager 1 has crossed the heliopause into the local interstellar medium or remains within the heliosheath. In this Letter we propose a test that will determine whether Voyager 1 has crossed the heliopause: If Voyager 1 remains in the heliosheath, the high densities observed must be due to compressed solar wind, with the consequence that Voyager 1will encounter another current sheet, where the polarity of the magnetic field reverses. Voyager 1 observations can be used to predict that the next current sheet crossing is likely to occur during 2015.

Voyager Interstellar Mission
The Voyager Interstellar Mission is exploring the interaction of the heliosphere with the local interstellar medium (LISM). Voyager 1 (V1) and Voyager 2 (V2) are both in the heliosheath, making the first in situ observations of the shocked solar wind beyond the termination shock (TS). The heliosheath extends to the heliopause; beyond the heliopause is the interstellar medium. The goal of the Vo...
متن کاملIn situ observations of interstellar plasma with Voyager 1.
Launched over 35 years ago, Voyagers 1 and 2 are on an epic journey outward from the Sun to reach the boundary between the solar plasma and the much cooler interstellar medium. The boundary, called the heliopause, is expected to be marked by a large increase in plasma density, from about 0.002 per cubic centimeter (cm(-3)) in the outer heliosphere, to about 0.1 cm(-3) in the interstellar medium...
متن کاملConfronting Observations and Modeling: The Role of the Interstellar Magnetic Field in Voyager 1 and 2 Asymmetries
Magnetic effects are ubiquitous and known to be crucial in space physics and astrophysical media. We have now the opportunity to probe these effects in the outer heliosphere with the two spacecraft Voyager 1 and 2. Voyager 1 crossed, in December 2004, the termination shock and is now in the heliosheath. On August 30, 2007 Voyager 2 crossed the termination shock, providing us for the first time ...
متن کاملTransient intensity changes of cosmic rays beyond the heliospheric termination shock as observed at Voyager 1
[1] This paper continues our studies of temporal variations of cosmic rays beyond the heliospheric termination shock (HTS) using Voyager 1 (V1) data when V1 was beyond 94 AU. This new study utilizes cosmic ray protons and electrons of several energies. Notable transient decreases of 5–50% are observed in galactic cosmic ray nuclei and electrons at V1 shortly after similar decreases are observed...
متن کاملVoyager 2 Observations of Plasmas and Flows
Voyager 2 has crossed through 20 AU of the heliosheath; assuming the same heliosheath thickness as at Voyager 1, it is now two-thirds of the way to the heliopause. The plasma data are generally of good quality, although the increasing flow angle of the plasma makes analysis more difficult. The average plasma speed has remained constant but the flow angles have increased to almost 60◦ in the RT ...
